WEDNESDAY, May 9, 2018 -- Many parents don't recognize the signs of speech and language problems in children, or don't know that early treatment is important, a new survey finds.
"Communication disorders are among the most common childhood disabilities -- and they are highly treatable in most cases," said Elise Davis-McFarland, president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
THURSDAY, May 3, 2018 -- As America's opioid crisis continues, too many toddlers are accidentally overdosing on narcotic medicines. But a new study suggests that better packaging might curb the problem.
Among kids under the age of 6, single-dose packaging prompted a 79 percent decrease in the number of unintentional exposures to a narcotic called buprenorphine. The medication is given alone or with the drug naloxone to help drug abusers beat their addiction.
TUESDAY, April 10, 2018 -- Parents, you may be able to stop feeling guilty about letting your toddlers play video games -- as long as you're playing with them.
That's the suggestion of a small study on the effects of touchscreen technology on kids' development. The research dovetails with growing concern that toddlers might be harmed as technology takes center stage in their lives and video games push aside physical activity.
TUESDAY, April, 10, 2018 -- The youngest victims of America's addiction crisis are not the teenagers tempted by tobacco, pot and pills.
Rather, they are tens of thousands of toddlers and preschoolers who are accidentally poisoned when they get into the drug stash of a parent or older sibling, claims a new report from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse.
TUESDAY, March 27, 2018 -- All those hours spent reading bedtime stories may pay off for you and your little ones beyond language and brain development: New research suggests it's also good for social and behavioral skills.
Evaluating prior studies on parent-child reading in children up to age 6, researchers in Hong Kong found positive effects for both sides in so-called psychosocial functioning, which includes mental well-being, emotions, behavior and relationships with others.
